On Finding Motivation

Pep in your step

Struggling to find the motivation to practice?

Then it’s time to put a little pep-in-your-step!

Motivation can be a fickle friend when it comes to practicing.

Like me, you've likely felt the ebb and flow that accompanies your practice sessions. On certain days, you’re inspired by the music and eager to delve into every note. At other times, your clarinet sits silently in the corner while the motivation to play dwindles.

But fear not! If the physical act of playing isn't calling to you today, there are myriad of ways to spark your interest and get you back into the practice room.

  • Start with listening to that piece you're working on.

  • Study the score to gain a better technical and theoretical understanding; there's so much to discover between the lines.

  • Dive into the story behind the music — some composers had the most intriguing lives!

  • Engage in mental practice by clapping rhythms, singing the melodies and internalising the music.

  • Watch an online tutorial, masterclass, or performance for inspiration and insight.

  • Take a walk to clear your mind.

And remember, practice doesn't have to be at full volume. Sing the melody internally, imagine yourself on stage playing beautifully, or simply close your eyes and listen deeply.

It's all about taking action! The road to progress is anything but straightforward - so start small - every little step you take is motivation for the next.

The magic you seek is in the work you're avoiding
