Faster Learning, Targeted Improvement, and Enhanced Understanding
The Power of Intentional Repetition
We all know that repetition is key when learning a new piece. But have you ever felt like you’re on a never-ending merry-go-round, playing the same bars repeatedly and hoping for different results each time? That's where intentional repetition swings in like a superhero to save the day!
Intentional repetition means zooming in on specific aspects of your playing—one at a time with each repetition. By doing this, you give your mind and fingers the chance to solve the puzzle of each section methodically.
Targeting Musical Elements
To get you started, here’s your cheat sheet of musical elements to hone in on, one at a time:
Rhythmic Execution: Precision is power! Use a metronome to ensure your rhythms are impeccably spot-on and reinforce the feeling of playing with excellent rhythm.
Accuracy of Articulation: Clarity is key. Ensure each note speaks clearly and with the intended treatment and desired length.
Tone Control: Aim for a rich, full, and consistent tone quality across your passages.
Breathing: Focus on how you harness the breath, paying attention to each step of process to generate an active airstream. Consider the necessary energy and support needed to better enhance the dynamic shape/s of the phrase you’re learning. Tip: breathe out before you breathe in!
Airstream: The airstream is the life force of your sound and allows you to play with the character you seek! Focus on maintaining an active, steady flow of air for a vibrant and lyrical sound.
Legato: Make those notes flow smoothly and seamlessly together.
Character: Infuse your music with emotion. What’s the mood? Bring the story to life with each phrase!
Posture: Maintain a relaxed yet ready stance. Create a natural space between the chin and the chest with relaxed shoulders and arms. Think of yourself as a musical ninja!
Harnessing the Benefits
By narrowing your focus in practice, you're not just scratching the surface. You're digging deeper into the music and sharpening your skills in a disciplined and methodical way.
Rather than aiming to correct every aspect of your playing with each repetition instead Intentional Repetition allows you to focus on a SINGLE area related to how you need to play in order to execute in style!
